Minority Enterprise Development Week (MEDWeek) 2006.  Minority Business Enterprise: Mastering the Supply Chain is the theme for this year’s conference.  Attendees will find opportunities to network with other businesses, connect with potential government and corporate partners, and participate in seminars and workshops that will enhance their business skills.  MEDWeek 2006 will be held at the St. Petersburg Radisson Hotel, located at 12600 Roosevelt Blvd.  Events begin the evening of September 12, and continue through September 15.  Click here for more information and a full listing of event activities.

Manufacturing Roundtable & Training Grant Opportunities, September 7.  The Bay Area Manufacturers Association (BAMA) and WorkNet Pinellas will hold this meeting to discuss the funding available to manufacturing companies for employee training.  Topics will include the types of grants available, what kinds of training can be funded, eligibility, and what is required of the business.  Join your fellow manufacturers at the EpiCenter, 13805 58th Street N., Clearwater, from 4:30pm – 5:30pm to learn more and contribute to the discussion.  Click here for more information and registration.

Sarasota International Design Summit, October 9 – 11.  Don't miss this inaugural event, an exciting new meeting of business and design professionals exploring design's importance for business differentiation and competitive advantage today.  The Summit's keynote presentations, workshops, tours, and social events will focus on how organizations around the globe are integrating design and innovation strategies to create powerful emotional connections with their customers and greater return on investment. Florida Medical Manufacturers’ Consortium’s 2nd Annual Medical Devices Symposium, October 3-4 in Tampa.  Medical device industry professionals in the areas of research and development, manufacturing, regulatory affairs, quality assurance, clinical and scientific research, and legal and corporate management should plan to attend this informative conference.  Topics will include an FDA Executive Briefing, University Technology Transfer, and a Venture Capital and Financing Panel.  Medical device industry experts will be on hand, and there will be vendor displays available during breaks, as well as networking opportunities.   The Symposium takes place at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, located at 700 S. Sources & Solution 2006 Member Appreciation Night.  The Suncoast 159 Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) presents this tabletop showcase event on October 12, from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at Tucson’s Grill and Cantina, 13565 Icot Blvd., Clearwater.  Participants can exhibit their best services and products, share resources, and network among local suppliers and manufacturers.  Admission to the show is free, with door prize drawings and snacks available to all who attend.  Display tables are available for a $250 fee.  Click here for more information, or contact Dick Thurman at (727) 549-7070.

Outbound Mission to São Paulo and Curitiba, Brazil. The Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of One Hundred will lead its first outbound mission to Brazil, November 5-10.  The mission will travel to the cities of São Paulo, which accounts for 18% of the nation’s GDP, and Curitiba, a city known for its technology-based and high value added firms.  Click here for registration and sponsorship forms.  Note that travel to Brazil requires a visa in addition to a passport.  For visa assistance and information, please contact Maria Hubert at (813) 276-9462, or email mhubert@tampachamber.com.

September 2006 Pinellas County Success Story

International Success for Bovie Aaron Medical.  On August 16, 2006, Bovie Aaron Medical Corporation in St. Petersburg, Florida, was honored with a U.S. Export Achievement Award, presented by Congressman Bill Young and George Martinez, Director of the Tampa Bay U.S. Export Assistance Center (USEAC), at the company’s St. Petersburg facility.  Robert Saron, President, accepted the award surrounded by Bovie Aaron’s leadership and dedicated staff.  Congressman Young congratulated the company, saying “You, the employees of Bovie Aaron Medical, are helping people live better lives through your commitment to your products.”  The Export Achievement Award recognizes companies that have benefited from U.S. Commercial Service export assistance to make their first export sale or open new markets.
