Jobs, jobs, medical product industry jobs: 10,000 medical product industry employees work in Pinellas County. In a new, yet-to-be released survey by USF's Center for Economic Development Research (CEDR). Pinellas is sweeping the category in biotech, medical devices and pharmaceuticals in our seven county Tampa Bay region. Out in front again. Pinellas County high tech product developers are ahead of the pack: 17 of the top 25 high tech product developers/manufacturers in the seven county Tampa Bay area are located in Pinellas, according to a recent Tampa Bay Business Journal ranking. A robust return: Businesses who received Economic Development's 2002 Business Assistance Survey forms made an excellent response, with 1,370 - nearly 14% - taking the time to complete the six page survey, sent to 10,000 Pinellas County businesses in early July. Respondents were also asked to volunteer additional comments and suggestions. 274 business owners listed their top three concerns: more business assistance for smaller businesses; better vocational and life skills training; and availability of qualified workers. St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport lands $6.3 million FAA administration grant award for improvements: Of the $6,312,105 awarded, $3,697,030 was realized through the assistance of Congressman C.W. Bill Young. The Airport will be able to use these discretionary funds to strengthen and overlay Runway17L/35R and to acquire a fire truck, rescue boat, thermal imaging device, and airport security enhancements. 9/11- how has it affected your business? Cynthia Spearman, Pinellas County Economic Development Senior Business Assistance Manager, and Bill Janes of the National Terrorism Preparedness Institute, will speak at a free breakfast seminar on Wednesday, September 11 on 9/11 - The Effect on Businesses. They're part of MEDWEEK (Minority Economic Development Week), which runs September 9-12 at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg and promotes economic development and education for minority business owners.
