Pinellas County Economic Development wins statewide recognition: Pinellas business research takes first place with an Award of Excellence from the Florida Economic Development Council for the 2001 Business Assistance Survey and ongoing Business Assistance Monitor. The research pieces won FEDC’s 2002 Promotional Materials Award at its annual conference in Orlando, June 22-24. Special recognition was also awarded to the department for the “3 Keys to Florida’s Business Success Brochure” and the “Economic Development Handbook.”  These items are now being used for business education by state and local officials. And the livin’ is economical: The St. Petersburg/Clearwater area is nearly the most economical place to live in Florida according to the latest ACCRA Cost of Living Index. For the first quarter of 2002, the composite index of cities shows the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area at 93.5, second only in economical living to Jacksonville, which measures 92.6. The national average is 100.0. The ACCRA Cost of Living Index compares goods and services prices of groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, health and miscellaneous elements. Pinellas County, an intelligent place to be: Florida’s High Tech Corridor, with Pinellas County a major partner, is one of the world’s seven “Intelligent” communities for 2002, according to the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), a project of New York-based telecommunications group called the World Teleport Association (WTA). The group recognizes large and small regions worldwide that create the information and telecommunications infrastructure needed to gain a competitive edge in today’s economy. The Corridor was recognized for its work in developing a high tech workforce and an effective relationship between academia, private business, and local and state governments. Good Business Pinellas TV features a Hippo Slide: Cool off vicariously as Good Business Pinellas In Depth visits the beach and looks at a water slide at the Tradewinds Resort which is delighting children and adults alike. This show also features your Pinellas County Economic Development office and its newly reconstructed website – www.siliconbay.org. Good Business Pinellas is produced in partnership with St. Petersburg College and airs weeknights at 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. to noon on weekends on the college’s educational channel 19. Pinellas County’s channel 18 airs the show Monday at 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Thursday at 10 p.m., Friday at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. For information, contact (727) 464-7498.

Industrial Revenue Bonds top $37 million in Pinellas County over last three years: Since 1999, Pinellas County has issued Industrial Revenue Bonds on behalf of six manufacturers totaling $20,930,000 (creating 290 new jobs) and to three non-profit organizations totaling $16,600,000. Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs) are long-term, below-market-rate municipal bonds issued by local governments on behalf of private companies to finance land, building and equipment.
