Brownfield Land Recycling
Pinellas County is the second smallest and most densely populated county in Florida. In Pinellas County we are reaching buildout, a condition in which virtually no large undeveloped vacant parcels remain. New development is only possible through infill construction and redevelopment of older properties. The community has recognized this situation and has embarked on a unique redevelopment strategy to manage population growth, preserve quality of life, and foster business development. The Brownfield Program is a cornerstone in our redevelopment and community revitalization efforts. View available Brownfield properties.
Thanks to the leadership of our elected officials, our Brownfield Program was established on September 17, 2002 to encourage the cleanup and redevelopment of abandoned, idled or underused properties. On September 21, 2004 the US EPA Region IV awarded Pinellas County an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant in the amount of $400,000. This funding is generally provided to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct planning and community involvement activities related to Brownfield sites. The funding is to be used to perform free Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments and other assessment activities within the county.
